On Lighting: The Tips, Tricks, And Tools To Light Your Space With Ease

Your light fixtures are one of the most important design elements in your entire home. The lighting in your home can make all the difference in creating a welcoming and comfortable atmosphere, increasing your resale value, and creating a sense of mood and drama in your space.

But with so many options available, it can be overwhelming to decide what lighting fixtures will best suit your needs. From chandeliers to floor lamps, recessed lighting to pendant lights, each type of lighting serves a specific purpose.

The reality is – choosing your lighting depends a great deal on your space. But some basic principles apply whether you’re creating a shabby-chic farmhouse or a mid-century modern design.

3 Tips For Choosing The Lighting In Your Space

When you’re choosing the light fixtures for your space, there are 3 key things to consider above all else – the function of your space, the hues of your lighting, and the size of your fixtures.

Here’s what we mean…

  1. Function - Different lighting is going to be required based on how you intend to use the space. For example, if you’re considering lighting for your office space where you’ll be working all day, it might require brighter lighting than what’s needed in a family room where you often dim the lights for movie night. Consider how much light a fixture might give you, and what you need, when choosing what to use in each space.

  2. Hues – Similarly to function, the hues of your lighting make a big difference in how your space feels. Do you need a bright, LED Strip under your bathroom cabinets? Or do you want a softer, warm light on your bedroom side table? Often, the hue can be changed simply with a light bulb, but other times it’s a decision you need to make when choosing the light fixture in the first place.

  3. Size – Our rule of thumb has always been to choose fewer, large lighting pieces instead of more, small lighting pieces. So if you’re thinking about your entryway, choose one large chandelier instead of 4 small recessed lights. This makes a big difference in how elegant and dramatic your space feels. Additionally, this choice is often associated with better resale value in your home because larger, more dramatic fixtures make a space feel more expensive.

Ultimately, choosing the perfect lighting for your home is all about finding a balance between form and function. In balancing these concepts and applying these basic principles, your light fixtures should not only serve their intended purpose but also enhance the overall aesthetic of your space.
