Baslow Brook Project Spotlight: It’s All in the Details

Baslow Brook Project Spotlight: It’s All in the Details

Details are what makes good interior design truly great. Whatever your style may be, it’s the details that make your space both personal and memorable. In other words, they make a house feel like a home.

A recent project we had the pleasure of undertaking, Baslow Brook, has a lot of details that make it incredibly special.

Before we got to work on it, however, we were actually hired to renovate a different home for the same client. Just as our team was getting started with that project, our client found and fell in love with the house on Baslow Brook. We quickly switched gears and dove into renovating Baslow Brook, which was incredibly exciting because they had discovered their dream home.

The house is a private residence that uses the North Carolina mountains as an inspiration for much of the design. The long driveway and surrounding natural landscape make it feel like a getaway or private retreat. But the true magic (if we do say so ourselves) is in all the one-of-a-kind details that contribute to the Mountain Modern feel of this home.

We worked closely with our client to ensure that each feature–big and small–within the home contributed to their precise vision. We wanted to do it right (this was their dream home, after all!), so it was great to have their input throughout the planning process.

Here are three of our top favorite design details from the project.

1.We used beautiful hand-finished wood slabs by Raleigh Reclaimed.

These slabs came from the same tree and were handpicked by us before getting incorporated in two different parts of the home. By using them in both the custom-made kitchen table and the TV cabinetry, we were able to create a sense of flow between the breakfast area and living room. The wooden paneling behind the TV also contributes a layered effect to the wall. By placing the paneling in front of a series of fun, modern black tiles, the reclaimed wood counterbalances them with a sense of lightness, natural beauty, and warmth. This layering acts like a sculpture within the room, bringing the focus in toward the seating are

2. Our team incorporated a lot of custom furniture.

In addition to the wooden slab furnishings, we used custom-made Century sofas (also made by Raleigh Reclaimed), a custom banquette in the kitchen, and custom upholstery. We ordered the sofas by the inch for this space, and then selected fabrics for the accompanying pillows and chairs. By choosing textures that reflect natural elements in addition to simpler neutral fabrics, we were able to bring the outside indoors while maintaining a modern feel. The custom banquette is upholstered with a marbled leather fabric that is reminiscent of stone.

3. We showcased the original windows in the home.

Because the home is secluded within the woods, there was no need to change or obscure the home’s original windows for the sake of privacy. Instead, we ensured the windows were fully showcased so plenty of light could stream in. Highlighting the windows brought out (yet again) the sense of the natural world existing inside, of all the amazing greenery contributing to the beauty of the space. To that end, we made sure never to obstruct the views; beside the panel of windows in the entryway, for example, we used a pretty but lighter wooden end table so as not to block too much light.

The only thing we love more than seeing every design detail fall into place is seeing our clients’ happy faces at the very end. This project was no exception. Headed by our designers Betsy Bardi and Natalie Dickman, our team is so grateful we got to design this unique home with the mountains as our muse.
